Shalom Church--Time Has Come

What's happening to Church? “ I’m certain that God is in the future, but wonder if the church has a future.” --Leonard Sweet "The future of the Church is Shalom for All-- the people of God, seeking the shalom of the community to where they have been sent into exile (Jeremiah 29:7)." --Michael J. Christensen Three Questions: What do we mean by ‘church’?    What is the future of the Church in North America in light of declining church attendance, increasing secularism, growth of the NONES (no religious affiliation), rise of the DONES (I’m done with church), and closing of churches? How can we “do church” differently to help us love God and our neighbor (and even our enemy) as we love ourselves? Disequilibrium Decline in Attendance [i] What researchers forecast for decades now is undeniably true: traditional church attendance continues to decline (Gallup, Pew, Barna) Although more than 40 percent of people “say” they go to church every w...

Happy Epiphany 2012

We attended Pacific Beach United Methodist Church today which began a six week Season of Epiphany series on Science and Spirituality, including weekly opportunities to "eat with a scientist" in the congregation and discuss with them how they integrate their scientific discoveries and their Christian faith.  Today's scriptural lesson and sermon was on the Star the Magi studied and followed from Babylon to Bethlehem. (Matt 2:1-12). "In the ancient world scholars believed that there was a direct correspondence between signs in the heavens and events on the earth,"  Pastor April Heron explained, " that cosmic events had early counterparts, that if there was a new star there had to be a new king.  The Magi were the scholars of their day, capable of careful observation and sustained study.  They sought to understand the relationship between the heavens and the earth, the spiritual and the material. They welcomed the counsel of others and were open to the messag...

Christmas Update on Hope Scholarship House from Rev. Copeland Nkhata

Dr. Christensen and Rev. Nkhata 'break ground" for new Hope House in 2011 Greetings to you!  I hope God is keeping you safely during this holy week of Christmas. These photos show how much progress we have made in constructing the HOPE SCHOLARSHIP HOUSE to make our dream sustainable in empowering many souls that God has placed in our care.    The ring beam is next and then the roofing in January.  The house should be ready for occupancy in just a few more months. What began in 2007 as a charitable educational project of Mzuzu United Methodist Church and WorldHope Corps to support selected youth who otherwise could not attend secondary school, will now become a self-supporting, sustainable, on-going scholarship program for boys and girls motivated to complete their education.   By building a beautiful, 4-bedroom family house in a new development area of Mzuzu that will generate monthly rental income, we will be able to support selected recipients throu...
