Anti-malaria Mosquito Nets Distributed in Malawi to Families in Need

WorldHope Corps Malawi completed its assigned distribution of 1000 anti-malaria mosquito nets this month to 11 villages, 6 Community Based Organizations (CBO) and one prison in northern Malawi—thanks to the generosity of sponsors in Berkeley and at Holman UMC in Los Angeles.  

So many parents and guardians are happy and thankful for the ‘household to household’ gifts of high-quality, safe, insect repellant, mosquito nets purchased in behalf of sponsors in the USA.  

Due to heavy rains and unpaved, impassable roads to the targeted villages, our scheduled distributions in April were delayed until May when they were all distributed. Other obstacles encountered which had to overcome included tight schedules of our partners from the Ministry of Health and their Health Surveillance Assistants.  

Together, we were finally able to distribute nets to families and demonstrate how to care, hang and sleep under them (since 70% of the people sleep on mats and not beds).


--> During distributions our WHC Mw team discovered that at least 30 kids between 2 years and 5 years suffered from Malaria last year, most unable to travel the long distance to a health center.  One three-year-old girl, Lonjenzo, for example, was down with malaria three times between January 2017 and May 2017 due to lack of protection from Mosquito bites.  But now their story is different since kids now have nets to protect them as they sleep on their bed or mat. 


WE WERE ONLY ABLE TO BUY AND DISTSRIBUTE 1000 NETS THIS YEAR.  IN ORER TO AQUIRE AND DISTRIBUTE AT LEAST 364 MORE NETS IN OUR TEN TARGETED COMMUNITIES, WE NEED MORE SPONSORS.  OUR “HOUSEHOLD TO HOUSEHOLD” NEED IS  $10 PER NET X 364 PERSONS.  WE NEED DONATIONS TOTALING $3,640 TO COMPLETE THIS PROGRAM.

Twelve New Wells in Malawi in 2012

New Well for Mayaka UMC sponsored by Church of the Resurrection  Villagers in Zomba Mayaka wait their turn for clean water from COR well. WorldHope Corps, Inc. succeeded in drilling 12 new villages wells in 2012, including three for Church of the Resurrection in Leewood, KS; two for World Childrens Fund in San Jose, CA, one for Helen Ford in Ocean Grove, NJ; one for Pittman Presbyterian Church in NJ; and five for local sponsors in Malawi. From 2007-2011, WorldHope Corps drilled a total of 18 wells in northern Malawi by hiring borehole drillers from the southern Malawi.  In April, 2012, we acquired our own well rig and equipment, hired our own crew, and learned how to drill wells ourselves.
